Music Background:

Over 30 years playing the trumpet. It is the only
instrument I wanted to play once I saw the bugler at the beginning of the
TV Series “Branded” (Chuck Connors). Started in the 5th grade
and played straight through. Played everywhere in high school. Played
everywhere in college. Joined the Army National Guard in college to play
with the band and have been serving my country for 25 years and counting.
Bruce McRae was my high school band director and
trumpet teacher. To this day, he is the trumpet player I would most like
to sound like. I also want his trumpet. He knows the one I am talking
about.
Humor
High school marching band: Starting off wrong in the
second strain of National Emblem and playing EVERY note wrong all the way
down. I was playing horrendously loud to make up for the lack of lead
trumpet players. The looks I got I will take with me to the grave.
College: Completely wiping out my high school pit
orchestra with an entrance at the wrong tempo. Again, there are those
looks!
Army: Being a part of the Army Bands program for 25
years has been a wonderful experience. In that time, there have been NO
humorous or otherwise embarrassing stories to tell. Mostly no one but the
Army band folk seem to get the humor here….at least if you ask my wife.
Anyway, I have been assured that negatives have been destroyed. I do
however have some good dirt on Erin Graham.
HFCCB: I actually wrote the choreography for
“Mouthpiece Mania” once.

What you most enjoy, or find especially
fulfilling, about being a part of Community Band: |
To me, the community band is a link to my roots. It
is about small towns and everybody knowing everybody. HFCCB is family.
We have all seen illnesses, births, deaths, weddings, and funerals. We
have all gotten older (except Lindsey) and we have seen the young’uns
surpass us in musical skills and go on to do great things. Mostly I have
seen the band grow to a musical force to be reckoned with. |
|
Of the music we play, is there a type or piece
that is your favorite: |
It sure isn’t “Mouthpiece Mania”.
I also think “Hogan’s Heroes March” is one of the
best ever written. |
