Music Background:
(such as: your start, experience, education,
mentor, inspiration, interesting or humorous personal story,
accomplishments) |
I started playing trombone in 4th grade
and played up through my second year of college, at which point I decided
to stop playing to have time for studies and other school-related
activities. I picked up the horn again to play in a brass group at church
for Christmas in 1993. After hearing about the community band in early
1994, Carol and I both realized how much we missed being in a band, and we
joined the following fall. Since then I have taken private lessons with
Mark Kellogg and a series of Eastman doctoral trombone students and
graduates. I’ve also attended the Tritone Jazz Fantasy Camp and the
Eastman School’s Canadian Brass Weekend.

What you most enjoy, or find especially
fulfilling, about being a part of Community Band: |
When Carol and I first joined the band, our children
were seven and five years old, and we enjoyed the weekly rehearsals in
part because they were a chance for the two of us to get out of the house
together. As the years went by, both girls took up band instruments and
eventually joined the community band when they reached middle school age.
At that point, instead of getting a night out away from the kids, we were
taking them with us to rehearsals! But it’s been a very enjoyable
activity for us to do together as a family.

Of the music we play, is there a type or piece
that is your favorite: |
Inchon, The Ascension, Music from the Mask of Zorro,
and Russian Christmas Music are all pieces that stand out for me as I
think back on the music we’ve played over the years. |
